CHAPTER 20

“I hope she won’t bite this woman,” said Brutus. “That won’t go down well.”

“Gina isn’t the aggressive type,” I said. Though I had to admit she had seemed very determined to bring this person to justice by any means possible.

“She should have listened to you, Max,” said Dooley. “I hate it when pets don’t listen to you. You’re always right, after all.”

“I appreciate the vote of confidence, buddy,” I said. “But I don’t always get it right. Not even half the time.”

“He’s right,” said Brutus. “Max often gets it wrong. Like with the metrosexual thing, for instance. He thought it meant I had to kiss Harriet on a moving train!”

“I didn’t say that, Dooley did!” I said.

“I can’t believe you all got it wrong,” Harriet said with a laugh. “You should have asked me, wuggie bear. I could have explained it to you. And for what it’s worth, I think this trip to the pet salon did you a lot of good. We should make it a regular thing from now on. Let’s say once a week?”

Brutus gave me a look of despair. “Once a week!”

“Or we could make it twice a week, if you want. I know I could go every day, but that’s probably a little steep for Marge’s budget.”

“And for my peace of mind,” Brutus murmured.

“There’s one thing I was wondering,” I told them. “Why am I the only one who got his glandular area probed?”

“I guess because Helga thought you needed it,” said Harriet. “And you did ask for the full package.”

“And he got it,” said Brutus with a grin. “The full treatment on his full package.” But when Dooley opened his mouth to ask what he meant by that, he was quick to add, “I mean that Max is the full package, so of course when Helga sees him walk into her shop, she figures he deserves the full treatment.”

“Of course he does,” said Dooley happily.

We had arrived on the street where presumably our mystery woman lived, and as we checked the numbers, soon we found ourselves standing in front of the house in question.

“I don’t hear any screaming,” Brutus said.

“Or any police sirens,” Harriet added.

They were right. As long as there wasn’t any blood running in the street, it meant we still had a chance to stop Gina from perpetrating what could only be termed a grave error in judgment. Dogs attacking humans in their beds usually are granted a one-way ticket to the vet to get a shot—and not one against rabies, either!

We decided to approach this matter in an organized and well-thought-out manner, so we first walked around the house, checking all the windows for a sign of Gina, and when we didn’t see anything out of the ordinary, finally decided that maybe our friend had decided to drop her crazy idea. But as we were about to call off our mission, suddenly the sound of a whispered conversation reached our ears. When we joined the participants in this conversation, we saw that one of them was Gina, and the other was a smallish tawny dog of the mutt variety.
